The Love of a Firefighter End of Chapter Part 3 - Closer than Ever

"Dave! Where have you....?"
"been... I know, Manne, where is she? Where's Lila? Have you seen her? Do you know where she is? Tell me, Manne!"
"Whoa Dave, slow down, will ya? We've been trying to contact you and..."
"My cell phone was dead. There was a fire at a factory and Lila was taken into the hospital. Manne, where is she? Is she okay? I must find her."
Before she could answer my questions, a man who escorted me into the morgue had come to me and said:
"Sir, you left this at the morgue. Again, I would like to say  I'm glad that she's not your friend. Have you found her?" he said, handing me my helmet.
"Morgue? Dave? You tried to find her at the morgue?" asked Manne.
"It was a long story. It wasn't her. Have you seen her? Tell me! She's alive, right?"
"I'm.... Dave, I'm sorry... ." Manne looked at me with a pitiful face.
"What?! It couldn't be. She's - she's not in the morgue. She's...."

"I know... she's..."

"What Manne?"

Manne began to chuckle.

"Manne? Why are you laughing? This ain't funny! Is this some kind of joke?"
 "Sorry, Dave."

After she had noticed the sharp look on my face, she cleared her throat.

"Dave, I could not help but seeing the look on your face. I-I don't know where Lila is. Once she opened her eyes, she got up and pulled the infusion out  of her arms. She insisted on leaving even though the nurses tried to stop her. She said that she wanted to go to her wedding. The nurses couldn't hold her for too long, and when the lightning strike happened, everyone was in panic. She ran off  her room while she was still wearing  a patient robe. For heaven sake, I tell you Dave, your fiancĂ©e is really something. Don't worry! She's a tough woman. She's probably fine now. You shouldn't be worried too much."

What? I was stunned, listening to what Manne had said. I didn't know if I were supposed to be glad or not. With her condition like that, I wondered if she could walk that far.

"Manne, may I borrow your cell phone?"
"Sure..., but hey, don't make a phone call here!"
"I know. I'm just going to borrow it for a while. Thanks!"
"Dave, where are you going?"
"Outside. I'm going to call her!"

I headed outside the hospital and  ran far away from the building. Far enough so that I would be in a safe distance to make a phone call. Luckily, the machine had been fixed, and the lightning strike had stopped.

I dialed the phone. Of course, the numbers I was going to dial was Lila's, but there was no answers. I tried five times without any result and, it was getting useless, so I decided to call someone else. I thought a while of whom I was going to call. Terry didn't know where she was, neither did Manne, and Tim? Why haven't I thought about him? He was going to say something about Lila that morning.

"Hello, sugar. I'm getting worried of you,  cupcake." Tim's flattery was heard on the phone.
 "Tim. It's me. Dave."
"Dave...?"
I chuckled. "Don't worry, Tim, Manne is still in the hospital now. She's still helping people  there. I want to ask you about Lila. Do you know where she is?"
"Lila? Of course, she's with me. She has just arrived from the hospital. Do you want to talk with her?"

"That would be great. Please handed the phone to her. I want to talk to her."
"Okay, Dave, wait!"
I waited for a while until finally a woman's voice called my name on the phone.
"Dave?" The familiar voice sounded more beautiful than usual.
"Lila, I'm.. I'm so relieved. Are you alright, honey?"
"No, Dave. I'm okay." She chuckled. I really missed her laughter.
" I'm just having a bit of pain in my arms. That's all. Probably because of the needles. Are you still in the hospital, Dave?
"Outside hospital. I thought you had..." I prevented those words from slipping out.
"What?"
"Nothing... Lila, my love.... I'm so glad that you're okay."
"Dave, about the wedding, I'm sorry..."
"It's okay. Don't worry about it. I should not have let my cell phone dead. I'm glad you're okay. I was so worried about you."
My tears started to flow. As a guy, I would stop myself from crying, but as Dave ... I did cry often. My first time of crying was when I was being born. Second was when the person whose life was saved by my father told me and mom how sorry he was for my father's death. Third, when mom cried on my shoulder in front of the train station when I left for Twinbrook. Fourth, when mom told me how much she loved me and then closed her eyes,  the last one was when I thought I would never see Lila again.

"Love, I'm going there now."
"No, Dave. You should help around at the hospital. They need you. I'm going to be fine here."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, I am going to see soon you. Just be careful. I love you."
 "I love you too, angel."
I hang up the call and then quickly went back into the hospital.

When I arrived back at the fire station, there was no one else I wanted to see but Lila.

"Command to all unit. We got Code 1 here. Grab your hoses and get your butt right here. Let's flush this couple out because there's going to be a wedding soon!"

Yes, Charmmane, of course, but  we had to wait until she has fully recovered and after we have booked the venue again. There were plenty of other weddings arranged in November.

The last day of November came, and it was the time that Lila and I had been waiting for.

I was almost late that day. There was a fire happened the night before, and it made us extremely exhausted. Thankfully, I managed to arrive a couple of minutes before the wedding started, but Lila hasn't, so I called her. That time, I had ensured that my cell phone was working.

"Lila, where are you? Our wedding is going to get started soon."
"Dave.. sorry, it's the wedding gown. She mistakenly brought the wrong size, and when I tried it, it became torn. Don't worry she has asked her assistance to bring the new one."
"Oh.... Okay, I'll be waiting. Just get here? I don't care if you have to wear your shirt."
"Now, Dave, come on, are you sure? Oh, the assistance has arrived. I'll be there soon. See you at the wedding!"

I waited for about fifteen minutes in anxiety.

And then...

She arrived.

She made me turn speechless...
